Titus Salt Fish

Ceramic

30cm L

2025

I made this piece during a hand-building workshop. The idea of making a traditional salt pig came to mind at first, but because I love fish so much, the idea quickly shifted into something more fun — a salt fish instead. It just felt right. What better to hold sea salt than a fish?

I wanted him to look a little alien, the way deep‑sea fish often do, so I gave him a blue body with black and purplish patchy skin. Those colours also tie in with a hand‑built ceramic oil pourer I bought from a ceramicist in the Peak District — her piece had the same strange, beautiful palette, and it felt natural to echo it here.

And of course, his name became Titus, after Titus Salt — the local businessman who created Salts Mill in Bradford. It made me laugh, and once I’d thought of it, the name stuck instantly.

He’s a quirky, practical little creature with a hint of deep‑sea oddness, and he still makes me smile every time I look at him
