Spring Verges Yellow

Acrylic on canvas

Yellow is an abstract response to the colours in the spring verges I noticed on my daily dog walks around the village with Bruce — flowers in yellow, purple, lilac and white.

The painting reflects those colours directly — floral and grass‑like shapes in yellow, purple, lilac and white set against a warm yellow ground. It wasn’t from a single moment of inspiration, but a slow build‑up of all those daily sightings gathered over time.

Originally, I painted this for my sister‑in‑law, but when I finished it, I didn’t give it to her. I didn’t think it was good enough. Then one afternoon she visited with my brother Dan she saw it and said, “I like that one.” When she came again and said the same thing, I realised she genuinely meant it — and that maybe I’d been too hard on myself. So, I decided it was good enough after all, and I gave it to her.
