Tree
Acrylic on canvas
40cm x 40cm x 1.5cm
2007
Tree began as a quiet design, inspired by a trip to Tokyo and painted slowly over many evenings.
The sky in this piece is shifting from evening into night — that strange, rare cream‑coloured sky you sometimes catch just before darkness settles. The tree stands in that moment of transition. As it deepens, the constellations of the northern night sky begin to appear, a soft celestial map above the branches.
Beneath the tree are two dragonflies, inspired by Japanese tonbo seen in lacquer work, small details that anchor the piece in the memory of that trip.
This was my first painting; it became the start of the current phase in my artist journey, running alongside working life.
